Try to Relax

  • If it’s possible to sleep, then sleep! If not, rest as much as you can. Try lying on your left side to help baby rotate into a good position.
  • If you need to move around, put your TENs machine on if you have one and ‘listen’ to your body – rock your pelvis, lean forward, sit on a birth ball, go for a walk.
  • Eat and drink whatever you fancy, little and often.
  • Get your birth partner to give you a massage – back, shoulders, feet…anywhere that feels comforting and relaxing.
  • Have a long soak in the bath – 2-3 drops of essential lavender oil added to some milk first, then put into the bath. The contractions might lessen for a while and give you a break, don’t worry, they’ll come back!
  • Distract yourself – watch a DVD, listen to music, knit, bake cakes…anything to take your mind off being uncomfortable.

When your contractions are consistently regular, around three every ten minutes, you have to concentrate during each one and you can’t have a conversation during a contraction you will probably want to contact a midwife for advice on what to do next – your contact numbers are in your maternity notes.

If you have ANY worries or concerns or your waters have broken, ring Maternity Assessment at the hospital.

If you’re having a home birth, your community midwife will have given you the contact numbers to ring.

“While the antenatal class was great in knowing all the options available to you, my husband thinking it helped him understand a lot too her reflexology/aromatherapy through pregnancy was blissful. An absolute steal as well as Jackie always had such helpful advice and support on pregnancy and labour. Can’t recommend her enough, thank you so much Jackie, you’ve been a guiding star x”
